The Bible’s story of Judah and Tamar recounts family intrigue, sexual transgression, and genuine life-and-death drama. Why do Judah’s two grown sons die suddenly? Why does Tamar disguise herself as a harlot? Why does Judah sentence Tamar to be burned at the stake? Does this story give biblical approval to an act of incest? What is this story doing precisely here, interrupting the Joseph narrative? Why does this story propel both Tamar and Judah to biblical immortality? We will do a close reading of Genesis 38 and refer to medieval and modern commentaries as well as the Talmud, looking for answers.
