Is a person responsible if s/he inadvertently violates Shabbat? Are people liable for property damages that they unknowingly cause? Does it matter why someone commits a religious violation? Must one intend to perform a mizvah in order to fulfill it? This course examines the role of intention in a variety of areas: tort law, Shabbat, avodah zara, sexual indiscretions, and the fulfillment of mitzvot, paying careful attention to how talmudic rabbis of different generations and locales thought about this issue. Skills in reading talmudic texts and rishonim are required.
Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1:30-3:30pm
10 sessions: June 30, July 2, 7, 9, 14, 16, 21, 23, 28, 30.
