A number of talmudic passages¸ such as those dealing with childbirth and ritual purity, discuss aspects of women’s anatomy and physiology. Because these descriptions often contravene not only modern science, but science as understood by medieval commentators, we will approach these sugyot by carefully reading the texts and by exploring the various theories of classical science that informed the rabbinic discussions.
