The Bangitout Torah - search for meaning: Parshat Shelach
Is instant gratification Jewish?!?!
Inspired by
Myles Brody
After the episode of the spies, in which the Bnai Yisrael are punished for listening to the pessimistic tales of the spies, G-d sentences the Nation to wander in the desert for 40 years until the current generation dies out.
(Thesis subject for doctoral students: “Sin of the spies, Snapple commercials and Fruit of the Loom: A case to avoid giant fruit?”)
The next morning a group of B’nai Yisrael decides to show their dedication and commitment to the land of Israel by attempting to conquer it without divine support, and much like east-coast NBA teams in the finals, they got whooped.
The question that stands is why their meritous actions not only went un-rewarded, but were so severely punished.
Nechama Leibowitz writes that the spies did not realize that the model had changed. Once Bnai Yisrael rejected the gift of Israel, the old promises of being delivered from Egypt into the chosen land were no longer applicable.
I would like to highlight the opinion of aspiring rabbi, Myles Brody, who was inspired by the Netziv on this point:
The lesson which Hashem was trying to impress on the Jewish people was that quick fixes do not work. The Jewish nation had become accustomed to sinning and receiving immediate forgiveness after either their repentance, or supplication from Moshe. (such as the sin of the golden calf would suggest) The people needed to learn the weight of their actions and realize that their damaging deeds have more than temporary ramifications.
Religion is a commitment and not a microwave dinner (although both have probably been around for a long time): Fulfillment is determined after a lifetime of dedication, and not after 5 minutes on the Defrost setting, gently peeling off the plastic seal and heating at HI for another 2 minutes until contents are steaming and delicious.
The single truth is that this lesson holds true with all relationships, be they spiritual or emotional. - One can not usually correct wrongs instantly. Only time allows for the recognition of true commitment, and dedication to faithfulness.
Please direct any suggestions
to Myles Brody.
