What did biblical figures think about the world around them? How did Heschel’s understanding of God and humanity inform his views on racism and civil rights? This course will introduce students to the philosophy of A. J. Heschel – to its foundations, implications and its contributions to the Modern Jewish thought. By close reading of paragraphs from his main book, God in Search of Man (1955), we will explore the questions he asks as a key to understanding his unique thoughts on the living God, the divine concern, and His relevance to the democratic society.
