What factors influence the halakhic decision-making process? How much leeway does a posek (rabbinic decisor) have? What determines when a given practice becomes normative? Based on Jacob Katz’s landmark study The Shabbes Goy, we will study the laws governing benefiting from a non-Jew’s labor on Shabbat as a model of halakhic change. We will focus on the way rabbinic authorities apply existing laws to new circumstances, as well as the influence of economic factors and popular practice on the development of halakhah.
